Honoring Dr. Jim Osterhaus – Founding Board Member and Current Chair, Clayton County Energy District

Dr. Jim Osterhaus, long-time Chair of the Clayton County Energy District, recognized for his service and leadership.

The Clayton County Energy District (CCED) extends our deepest appreciation to Dr. Jim Osterhaus of Guttenberg for his years of visionary leadership and dedicated service as Board Chair since 2019. A founding board member since CCED’s inception in 2016, Jim has guided the organization with intellect, integrity, and a steadfast belief in the power of local leadership to shape a cleaner, equitable energy future.

A retired dentist, Jim, and his wife, Sue, have long “walked the talk” of clean energy. In 2007, they installed geothermal heating and cooling and a solar array during a home renovation—projects that have since paid for themselves many times over and continue to demonstrate the lasting value of green meets green investments.

Jim’s experience as a community leader, professional and lifelong learner has shaped his service to the Energy District and his approach to leadership. Those who have worked alongside him know him as a super sharp, open-minded, and collaborative thinker. Jim listens first, leads by example, and inspires others to act for the good of future generations.

He was instrumental in implementing a pilot project to replicate the locally led, county-based Clean Energy District model that has now expanded to 15 Iowa counties and continues to grow. Under Jim’s leadership, CCED strengthened its foundation in community engagement, technical assistance, and local partnerships.

As Jim transitions from his role as Chair to continue serving as a valued board member, we celebrate his years of faithful contribution—his time, talent, and treasure—and his enduring commitment to the mission of advancing clean, efficient, affordable, and local energy for all.

Thank you, Dr. Jim Osterhaus, for your years of wisdom, leadership, and example. Your vision and generosity have left a lasting imprint on the Clayton County Energy District and the clean energy movement across Iowa.
