Last Year for Solar Tax Credits: Winn Solar Fair

Act Now: 2019 is the last year for full solar tax credits and the Winneshiek Energy District is marking this moment with an event to help the public go solar.  The Winneshiek Solar Fair on Saturday, March 30th will offer an opportunity to explore going solar.

Home, farm, and business owners will get connected to resources, and talk with local solar installers from 9 AM to noon at the Danan Lansing Building. Local solar installers Decorah Electric, Blake Electric, Tom Massman Construction, and Perry Novak Electric will be present to answer questions and talk to customers.

Three short workshops will run every hour:

:00 Solar Tech 101 will teach about the basics of a customer owned solar system.

:20 Solar financials will explore tax credits, financing, net metering, payback periods, and other ways to afford the upfront cost of going solar.

:40 Solar Q&A: Energy district staff will field your questions about going solar.

The Winneshiek Solar Fair will equip attendees with a “Go Solar Checklist,” a practical guide to navigating the process of going solar.

“If you’ve been on the fence, it’s time to give solar a serious look. Prices have never been better and the tax credit starts to phase down after this year.”

The federal tax credit is still at the full 30% level for solar systems installed by 12/31/2019. After this year, that tax credit will steadily decline (26% in 2020; 22% in 2021). The state of Iowa will match this at 50% of the federal tax credit, and will also decline over the next three years.

Perry-O Sliwa has owned solar since 1982. She encourages those considering solar, saying “It’s trouble free and so satisfying to know you’re using the sun to generate electricity.”

This event is free to attend and open to the public. The Green Iowa AmeriCorps team will coordinate kids activities, allowing adults the ability to learn about solar and shop for their future clean, local energy system.
